Urban Knitting Studio opened in March 2003. Located in Hayes Valley, one of San Francisco's remaining neighborhoods, which prides itself in being supported by independently owned, local businesses, it's more than just a knitting store; Urban Knitting Studio creates a modern and unique twist on the traditional craft. The physical space is industrial in design creating a gallery backdrop for the colorful display of artistic yarns. An inviting and collaborative atmosphere, the environment is a peaceful haven for knitters to retreat and browse for inspiration. Classes and workshops for all levels are also offered.
Helen Kim started the business as a way to extend her creative background. She learned to knit and crochet as a child and continued to do so through her college years. Helen's approach to knitting is similar to architecture, her previous profession. "It's designing and building with yarn."
After practicing architecture for ten years, she extended her expertise into corporate consulting. But the lack of creative outlet in the corporate world brought her back to a more artistic arena. Turning the art of knitting which Helen has embraced for thirty years into entrepreneurship was a natural progression. "Owning my own business and creating works of art every day fulfills many of my ambitions and challenges. And sharing that passion is my goal."
